It was with more than a little trepidation that I deposited my doctoral thesis at the University of Ottawa this past September. These feelings were, of course, accompanied by a great deal of satisfaction and relief at having (nearly) completed a project that I have been working on for years now, and for which I remain passionate. My trepidation stems from the usual feelings of anxiety that come with submitting a thesis: I pray to Clio for a speedy administrative process and for a timely and successful defence. Aging and response properties in the parking-lot model

An adsorption-desorption (or parking-lot) model can reproduce qualitatively the densification kinetics and other features of a weakly vibrated granular material. Here we study the the two-time correlation and response functions of the model and demonstrate that their behavior is consistent with recently observed memory effects in granular materials. Although the densification kinetics and hysteresis are robust properties, we show that the aging behavior of the adsorption-desorption model is different from other models of granular compaction. We propose an experimental test to distinguish the possible aging behaviors.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, to appear in Eur. Phys. Jour.

Towards a More Inclusive Music Education: Experiences of LGBTQQIAA Students in Music Teacher Education Programs Across Pennsylvania

During the past decade, the field of music education has seen an increase in the amount of scholarship surrounding LGBTQ studies in music teaching and learning. For example, the University of Illinois hosted three symposia for the field of music education dedicated to LGBTQ studies (2010, 2012, 2016), and proceedings from these symposia were published in three separate issues of the of the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education (2011, 2014, 2016).
